Past Mela’s

The origins of Preston Mela began in 1992 when members of the South Asian community got together to celebrate their culture as a part of The Guild. Below, you can see a film about that historic journey all the way through to present day. Back then the celebration centred around a parade through the town (as it was then) where as now Preston Mela is a site based event.

Part of the role of this site is to archive these important events and ensure that such memories are kept. Please contact us if you have any memories or stories about Preston Mela that you would like to share with us.

We have more detailed information on past Preston Mela’s through the reports that were produced for each event, please click the various links here. 2017 report2017 brochure2012 report2012 flyer2011 report – 2009 report –  2007 poster.

There have also been various themes promoted at previous Preston Mela’s – please find a document about climate change here and a leaflet about Nagar Kirten here.

The years were rolled back in 2012 when we were part of The Guild parade again – this time in the main parade and the torchlight parade. You can also see a film of that below.
